A man with a brand new Mazda CX-90 SUV made an incredibly expensive mistake after he decided that a $120 price tag for an oil change was ‘too much’ for him to pay.

A Reddit post from a mechanic showed what happened when the Mazda came to his dealership, with the owner of the car having done some major damage while attempting to do the oil change himself.

The owner of the car felt it was too expensive to pay for; however, the subsequent damage he did to the CX-90 cost him over $6,000.

The mechanic could not quite believe what he had to deal with, nor how much the owner ended up paying – consider this a cautionary tale.

What happened to the Mazda CX-90 SUV?

The mechanic recounted the story, as well as providing a few pictures of the work they did on the car.

According to them, the owner decided to do an oil change himself.

This was after he found out that the cost was around $120 (CDN).

That roughly converts to $86 (USD).

During the work, the owner jacked the 4,000lbs vehicle up, but did so by using the oil pan as the jacking point.

Doing this cracked the oil pan, naturally causing oil to pour out.

This meant the owner would have to take the Mazda CX-90 to the dealership after all.

However, it also led to a costly additional repair bill.

The repair bill cost a lot more than $120

As the mechanic said on Reddit, the oil pan was a stressed member of the engine.

The flat-rate time for swapping it out meant it was a 30-hour job, and that caused the costs to rise massively.

The Mazda’s owner ended up paying $6,000 (CAD) in total, which roughly converts to $4,330 (USD).

Removing the oil pan necessitated the removal of the whole engine from the car.

Hence, how long and expensive the job was.

Making this worse was that the Mazda SUV was not only brand new, but it also cost the driver $80,000 to buy.

It is unknown why the owner decided to jack the car up using the oil pan, rather than the actual jacking points – but he and his wallet certainly paid the price.

The repair bill, as seen from this Ferrari, could have been worse.

But the Mazda owner’s error turned out to be a very expensive mistake.
