A phone expert tried to build his own Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra using parts he bought from AliExpress to see if it was cheaper than buying a refurbished one.
You can buy all sorts of things from AliExpress, from bizarre-looking Porsche 911 backpacks to somewhat questionable tech.
You can also buy spares and parts for popular cell phone brands.
So, YouTube creator Phone Repair Guru decided to buy some to find out if he could make his own, cheaper version of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.

He bought all the parts for the Samsung on AliExpress, but would it work?
A refurbished handset will cost you around $360, but the YouTuber was keen to know if he could make one for less than that.
Interestingly, it’s not the YouTuber’s first time using AliExpress to try and build a phone from scratch – he’s previously tried to DIY an iPhone 13 Pro.

This time around, he turned his attention towards the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and was able to source all the parts he needed on AliExpress, including the S Pen, cameras, motherboard, and screen.
After gathering all the pieces he needed, he started to build the phone directly into the empty casing.
The expert made light work of building the phone, but even after he assembled the parts and pieces, he wasn’t convinced it’d work.
“To be honest, this has gone very smoothly for a phone with AliExpress parts, but I still have absolutely no idea if this thing will even turn on,” he said.
Turning the Samsung on, the first impressions were not great, and the YouTuber wasn’t happy with the ‘very ugly screen’, pointing out the odd-looking bezels around it.

It also had some other issues, including not being able to vibrate and no Bluetooth on the S Pen.
But the phone did run, and it looked more or less like the real deal.

So, how much did it cost compared to a refurbished model?
The phone expert was able to find everything he needed to make the Samsung on AliExpress.
But some of the components weren’t as cheap as you might think.
The motherboard cost around $126, while the screen and casing were around $70.
In all, the parts for the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra cost around $292, which the YouTuber reckoned was around $70 or so less than a refurbished model.

However, as well as the cost of the parts, the DIY phone also required quite a bit of work and expertise, but for the YouTuber, it was still a win… mostly.
“All in all, I would say this was a success if you can look past the bezels on the screen and the few other issues we had,” he said.
