Not sure how to care for your SUV? This mechanic has you covered

SUVs are a great choice of wheels, but due to their big shells and mighty engines, they can sometimes prove a pain to look after.

So, in a bid to give you a helping hand, the guys over at Go Banking Rates spoke to the Arizona-based mechanic to see what it really takes to last 300,000 miles.

Firstly, the mechanic recommends that every 5,000 miles you should change your SUV’s engine oil and filter as it keeps ‘all mechanical components of the engine clean and lubricated’.

Plus, using the real deal when it comes to oil and fuel is important too, and could be the most important element to keeping your car in good shape.

Next, the mechanic says that you should take note of how often the brand of your SUV states to go in for a check.

Leaving it too long between suggested times could result in higher levels of damage, with parts being worn down at a quicker rate.

Another way to keep your SUV ticking over and ready to take to the open road is to simply keep your eyes peeled.

By making sure you get a professional to take a look at your vehicle annually, problems can be dealt with in the early stages.

Plus, if you inspect how your tires are performing on a six-month basis, you will be extra prepared and safe.

As the saying goes, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

There is some old-fashioned common sense involved

Aside from following the steps above, some critical self-thinking comes into play with SUV care, too.

By simply driving carefully and keeping your vehicle clean, your car could last a lifetime.

We’re talking about opting for smoother clutch control and braking with less force, as well as choosing smoother roads to travel on.

The mechanic also advised choosing the highway frequently, especially for drivers who tend to use their cars on short trips.

So, even though some may be a pain to schedule, like seeing a professional once a year, you can quite easily integrate most of the mechanics tips into everyday life and see your SUV hit hundreds and thousands of miles.
