Two pals visited China to try out the Xiaomi SU7 and Xiaomi YU7 and took them on a wild road trip across the country.

Xiaomi is a relatively new name in the EV industry, but it’s already making waves, and can count Ford CEO Jim Farley among its fans.

Despite being hugely popular in China, Xiaomi is yet to branch out into any overseas markets, although the marque did announce it would be coming to Europe in 2027

So, for those wanting to give the Xiaomi SU7 or Xiaomi YU7 a go, you’ll need to head to China, which is exactly what Out of Spec Roaming did.

The duo tried the Xiaomi SU7 and YU7 and shared their honest thoughts

Norwegian content creator William from Out of Spec and fellow YouTuber Felix from the Electric Felix channel headed out to China’s Yunnan Province to embark on the ‘adventure of a lifetime’.

They decided to first hire a Xiaomi SU7, but had to get themselves a Chinese SIM card and phone number before they could do so.

After almost an hour, they finally managed to hire one, and the first impressions were strong.

“The SU7 looks amazing,” William said before climbing in. “I’ve never driven a Xiaomi car, so this will be exciting.”

As soon as he got on the road, William was even more impressed, saying driving ‘felt great’ and ‘Tesla-like’, which should come as little surprise for an EV nicknamed ‘the Tesla killer’.

The duo took the SU7 out onto the highway, as well as out on more scenic routes, including a trip to the Tiger Leaping Gorge, as well as off-roading in more rural parts of China.

And no matter what they threw at it, the EV’s handling held up.

The pair also praised the car’s efficiency, after racking up 155 miles and using just 37.7kWh.

The following day, the YouTubers found another hire company and managed to rent a Xiaomi U7 to see how it compared – and much like the SU7, it didn’t disappoint.

In fact, both cars got a big thumbs up.

“They have the right amount of comfort and the right amount of sportiness,” William said.

“Clearly they are designed to be drivers cars.”

The pair were also impressed by how cheap it was to charge

As you might expect for a country with more than 20 million EVs on the roads, the charging infrastructure in China is robust.

Even when out and about in smaller towns, the two men managed to find high-powered charging points

However, although the YouTuber didn’t struggle to find charging stations, they did point out that a Chinese phone number was almost always required to access them.

But having secured one, it was a pretty straightforward process.

It was also pretty cheap; the pair was left surprised that they could get 13kWh for around $1.43.

“Ten cents per kilowatt hour at this truck charging stop,” William commented.

“Absolute insanity. And I’m so glad that we stopped here. So cheap.”
