Mercedes once turned to Porsche for help and the result was a '90s sedan quicker than most supercars

In the 1990s, Mercedes and Porsche teamed up to create the Mercedes-Benz 500 E, which is still faster than some sports cars today.

Mercedes and Porsche are, let’s face it, and always have been, rivals, but they became allies on this occasion.

And we’re certainly glad they did.

It’s been over 30 years, but this car would still leave many modern internal combustion cars for dead.

In the early 1990s, Mercedes turned to Porsche to create a unique sedan called the Mercedes-Benz 500 E.

Mercedes wanted it to be comfortable and understated, but still fast.

The result was the 500 E, or the E 500, as it is sometimes called, a seemingly unassuming sedan powered by a 5.0-liter V8 – borrowed from the SL Roadster – with 326HP.

It did 0-62MPH in just 5.9 seconds.

That’s still impressive today, so you can imagine what it must’ve been like in the early 1990s, when it was faster than some sports cars.

Just over 10,000 units were built, and most still exist today.

Even so, this car is expensive, partly because it’s so difficult to find one in good condition.

This Mercedes-Porsche collab is further proof that most automakers aren’t a one-trick pony, in that they make cars, but also build components for other brands.

And sometimes create entirely different products that aren’t cars.

Rimac, for example, makes cars, but it also manufactures batteries that other automakers use, including Porsche, coincidentally, and then we have Tesla, which also makes solar panels and, of course, robots.

Then there’s Peugeot, which tried selling just about any product you can think of at least once, including pepper grinders, believe it or not, and Volkswagen.

Volkswagen is probably the most fascinating example of them all because, as some people may already know, the German manufacturer manufactures – pardon the pun – more sausages than cars.
