Mercedes' Chief Technology Officer puts claim Mercedes-Benz cars will use BMW engines to bed

Markus Schaefer, Chief Technology Officer at Mercedes-Benz, said the company won’t be using BMW engines.

The rumor began spreading a while back because some people believed some Mercedes engines weren’t future-proof.

At IAA Munich, Schaefer said this was indeed just a rumor.

And he also shared some good news.

Why Mercedes-Benz won’t be using BMW engines

As reported by Motor1, Mercedes-Benz Chief Technology Officer, Markus Schaefer, addressed these rumors in front of the crowd at IAA in Munich.

“There is no truth to these rumors. We have developed our own new family of modular engines [that] are already compliant with regulations,” he said.

And he also shared some good news.

“We will continue to offer V12s and also V8s,” he added.

The rumor began spreading probably because some of the newest (and smallest) Mercedes engines aren’t exactly loved by customers.

For instance, Mercedes decided to bring back the V8 on some AMG models because the four-cylinder engine that replaced the V8 wasn’t selling despite being actually more powerful than the V8.

At the same time, Mercedes is still developing electric units.

Not only that, they’re pioneering solid-state batteries.

Just over a year ago, they achieved 600 miles on a charge, and then, last week, they did 750 miles on a charge.

Is the downsizing trend slowing down?

For a long time, automakers were downsizing, mainly to meet emission standards.

The idea was to replace big V12s with smaller supercharged and/or turbocharged V8s, and V8s with smaller V6s, often with electric power as well.

However, this trend is changing now.

At the end of the day, customers want what they want, which is why Ram had to bring back the V8, and why Mercedes is also bringing back some V8s.
