Mercedes-Benz could be about to change the future of the company with a new electric vehicle (EV) to rival anything that Tesla has put forward to date.

It’s been clear for a while now that electric vehicles are the future and that we must all – as a planet – move away from the ICE (internal combustion engine)

However, we are still in the early days of the electric revolution, and there are problems to be overcome, such as range, charging point availability, and – chiefly – price.

This Mercedes might be about to flip the script on that drama.

When you think of a Mercedes-Benz car, you get ideas of luxury, the purr of the engine, and the timeless German engineering.

You probably don’t associate them with the gentle hum of an electric engine – that’s much more of a Tesla thing.

But, sensing the way things are heading, the marque has been teasing a new electric car that could put up numbers to compete with even the best that Elon Musk can bring to market.

It’s not even that far off the world record for an electric vehicle on a single charge, although there is still a way to go before that sort of distance is the norm.

According to Electrek, the company has readied a production-spec model and given audiences a fleeting glimpse of what the future might hold.

It might even be ready to hit the streets in 2026 if those reports are to be believed.

What’s so special about this new electric Mercedes?

Forget about what features it has for a moment – there’s nothing on the interior, the sound system, or even the style that is important here.

With new EVs, it’s all about range, efficiency, charging time, and – crucially – cost.

That’s where this Merc could be a little bit special.

The company expects this car to have a driving range of more than 466 miles (750km) as well as an 800-volt platform capable of providing as much as 248 miles (399km) of driving charge in just 15 minutes.

That’s almost like the sort of speed you’d get charging up a hydrogen car – if you can find a pump, that is.

Numbers like those would definitely pique the interest of Tesla, putting this new Mercedes in direct competition with their Tesla Long Range RWD Model 3, which boasts a range of around 363 miles.

How much will this new Mercedes-Benz EV cost?

So, what about the price?

Well, the Mercedes is still not cheap, but – come on – it’s a Mercedes.

It’s expected to retail at around $50,000, whereas that aforementioned Tesla will set you back $42,490.

Think of the long-term savings, though – not just for your wallet, but also for the environment.

As for Mercedes, as one curious observer commented, this shift into the future could be ‘a very big deal’.

To all the other manufacturers – the ball is in your court.
