Michael Caine’s gold Rolex fetches record $166,500 at auction

British actor Sir Michael Caine recently teamed up with Bonhams to auction a variety of personal items, including an 18-karat yellow gold Rolex, which ended up selling for a record-breaking $166,550.

Sir Caine, 88, retired in late 2021 after appearing in over 160 films during a career that spanned more than seven decades.

He won a plethora of awards in the process, including two Oscars.

The auction included 183 items for a grand total of $1.1 mln, and the Rolex wasn’t the only timepiece on offer.

Sir Caine also chose to auction his Breitling Navitimer, $14,300, a carbon fibre Traser H3 Black Storm Pro, $5,400, and a Patek Philippe La Flamme, $25,100.

However, the Rolex dominated headlines for two reasons; the price it fetched and because it was actually worn on screen by the actor in several films, including A Shock to the System (1990) and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988).

The Oysterquartz was first launched in the early 1970s and discontinued in 2001.

It is quite rare, chiefly because Rolex has almost always only produced automatic watches throughout its history, whereas the Oysterquartz, as the name suggests, is a battery-powered timepiece.

Bonhams’ estimate was rather conservative, as they were expecting to fetch between $10,500 and $16,000.
