Michelin has created new tires which it claims can boost an electric car's range

With the quest for more and more range from an EV still in full swing, Michelin has claimed it can increase the range of electric cars with some new tires.
That might sound impossible to some, as larger batteries and more motors are often the way to get more miles out of your EV.
But tires can play an important part in the efficiency of any car, and the right kind can actually make yours that little bit more efficient as well.
So if Michelin has managed to do this with EVs, it could be a massive game-changer.

How Michelin created its new tires
The new tires are called Michelin Primacy 5 Energy, and they cater to those who want to get the most out of their EV.
According to the French company, these can stop eight percent shorter in the wet than their predecessor.
Built within them is something the company has called Energy Passive 2.0 Technology.
That includes functionalized elastomers, which help the tires last longer, and Michelin says these new versions can last 40 percent longer than competitors.
But it’s the efficiency game where these tires take the big points.

Testing showed that in a gasoline-powered car, they can reduce fuel consumption by six percent.
In an EV, however, that rises to a 10 percent reduction in energy usage.
On the road, that could add up to reasonable savings of both battery and money per month.
Improving grip helped the tire manufacturer increase efficiency
Michelin has also been able to improve the efficiency of cars by improving the grip of its tires.
Improved grip in wet and dry conditions can decrease rolling resistance.
This is the main enemy of fuel efficiency, as well as that of batteries in EVs.
The new Pilot Sport Energy 5 rubber showcases this brilliantly.

Thanks to the use of a new Energy Passive compound, the French company has reduced the rolling resistance.
For a sport tire, the company says the levels of resistance are lower than usually seen.
Clearly, the French tire manufacturer has worked hard to make sure modern cars are as efficient as possible.
So if you have an EV, make sure you have the best tires possible to get the most out of that battery.
