When a pilot flying home spotted a stranded driver below, he decided to do something incredibly brave.
Missouri pilot Matt Lombard was flying his Robinson R22 Beta II when he saw the red SUV in the middle of nowhere.
The car appeared to be stuck in the mud, so Lombard decided to land and offer the man a lift to safety.
But the driver’s reaction to his offer of help was unexpected to say the least.

This pilot spotted a stranded driver
It’s no secret that becoming a pilot requires precision and skill, and when something unexpected occurs, they have to think fast.
That’s exactly what Lombard had to do.

Content creator and pilot Matt Lombard – or @stlriverhelicopters – spotted the driver and made the split decision to land to check if they were ok.
“Flying home and saw this car stuck in the mud,” he said.
But when he reached the driver, they had an unexpected reaction.

It turns out that the driver was actually just waiting for someone.
“He ended up not wanting a ride since his friend was coming,” the pilot said.
When the pilot shared his story online, including showing just how barren the area was, it garnered quite a reaction online.
“Many questions, starting with what was he doing there?” one person said.
“I would be like ‘I got a friend coming but can you fly me around for 30 mins and bring me back?'” said a second.
Others tried to make sense of the situation.
“To be fair, I wouldn’t leave my vehicle either. If it’s stuck from me doing donuts, I would have called someone already… his story is completely plausible,” one said.
Pilots are no strangers to helping others
From turbulence to a fear of heights, there are a lot of legitimate reasons that worry people when flying.
And pilots know this.
So, to put people’s minds at ease, they’ve tried to help out by explaining certain risks and why they’re not as scary as they might feel.
One pilot took to social media to offer advice about turbulence and explained why you don’t need to be worried about it.
Another pilot landed a huge Airbus A380 on a wet runway using a special technique, showing that pilots are incredibly capable even in the most turbulent of weather.
