It appears that the legendary Mitsubishi Evo could be returning.

But it might be coming back in a very different form.

That’s because it could make a return as a hybrid.

Or it might even come back as an all-electric performance car.

Could the Mitsubishi Evo…be coming back?

Well, this is certainly some interesting car news.

And it comes hot off the heels of rumors of a fellow icon potentially being revived.

Earlier this month, reports suggested that the Subaru Impreza WRX could be coming back.

Well, it now appears that its legendary Japanese rival could be revived as well.

And it’s all because of a very interesting quote.

Mitsubishi’s drivetrain engineer is a man called Kaoru Sawase.

Sawase recently sat down for an interview with Australian publication Drive.

And Sawase is driving hopes that the incredible Evo could come back.

“We have a dream, of course, for Lancer Evolution,” Mr Sawase said with the help of a translator.

“It’s my personal dream.”

Trust us – it’s our dream as well.

And what makes it all even better is that it could be more realistic than anyone thinks.

Sawase confirmed that Mitsubishi does have the technology to make a revival happen.

“We have a variety, a range of technologies on-hand,” the engineer confirmed.

Of course, the Japanese brand is most likely considering an electrified version of the nameplate.

“Naturally, considering the global [environment], the times, that will be the direction that we will be going,” Sawase elaborated.

“I fully understand electrification performance for the vehicle dynamics.”

Could two legendary rivals spark each other’s return?

To be clear, this does not confirm that the Mitsubishi Evo will return.

But it certainly fills us with nostalgia-fueled hope.

The rumors come at a very interesting time for retro-era sports cars.

As mentioned at the top, Subaru is potentially bringing the Impreza back to the global stage.

So, in a weird way, having the Robin to complement the Batman of Japanese sports cars makes perfect sense.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution was first revealed back in 1992.

It was originally only ever intended for Japanese markets.

But such intense demands in global secondary ‘gray’ markets led to a supply for other countries.

Mitsubishi decided to export the eighth-generation Evo to the United States after witnessing the success of the Subaru Impreza WRX.

It was finally – and sadly – retired from production back in 2016.

But it has been a dream of car fans everywhere to see the Evo make a return.

And it now appears that we might at least be one step closer to that dream becoming a reality.
