What was this mystery Mercedes?
To put it into perspective, $15 million is more than the stunning Home Alone mansion was selling for.
That’s right – this car cost more than that humongous house in which Macaulay Culkin kicked burglar butt.
It must be some car.
A photo of it was first shared to Reddit, in which a user was asking his fellow car lovers in r/whatisthiscar to help him out.
Usually when unidentified cars are posted on the forum, there are a ton of suggestions coming from each direction.
When it came time to label YouTuber Nikocado Avocado’s card, the site was ablaze with theories.
But when it came to this Mercedes, the correct answer rang through loud and clear.
It was a CLK-GTR Roadster, one of six in the world.
Taking a closer look at this one of six CLK-GTR Roadster
The CLK-GTR Roadster first arrived on the scene in 1997, when it debuted at that year’s FIA GT Hockenheim 4 Hours.
It would go on to appear at the 1997 Fia GT Nürburgring 4 Hours and contests, where it would secure Mercedes four 1-finishes.
After 1998, the car would be retired.
But it still holds a special place in the hearts of many car fans, as demonstrated in the Reddit thread.
“Well, holy s**t,” one admirer wrote, “I’ve never seen this particular Merc before!”
Another commented: “What an absolutely beautiful machine.”
There was one person in the thread who had seen it in the flesh – or the aluminium honeycomb frame, as it were – when it was featured at the Las Vegas Concours.
It just goes to show how powerful a legacy can be.
