Americans and cars have always gone hand in hand, but it looks like young people might be changing that.
A recent survey found that nearly half of young Americans are okay with not owning a car anymore.
Instead, they are open to new ways of getting around, and many prefer using ride-hailing services or public transport instead of buying their own car.
But why is this happening? Let’s find out.

Young Americans Are Open to New Ways of Getting Around
The survey, conducted by Deloitte, asked 286 Americans aged 18 to 34 about their thoughts on car ownership.
Surprisingly, 44% of them said they would be just fine not owning a car.
This shift in attitude is not just happening in the USA.
In Germany, 35% of young people felt the same way, while in India, a huge 70% were ready to ditch car ownership for MaaS – mobility as a service – options.
One reason for this change could be where people are living these days.
City life often makes owning a car unnecessary, while rural areas still rely heavily on personal vehicles.
However, as the survey had a small sample size, it doesn’t fully represent everyone’s opinion in the US.
Interestingly, another study found that only five percent of Americans want to buy an electric vehicle, showing that traditional gasoline and diesel cars are still the top choice for many.
People’s opinions on cars are constantly changing
At the same time, concerns about autonomous vehicles remain high, with 52 percent of people worried about self-driving taxis, and 64 percent concerned about autonomous trucks on highways.
No wonder, ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft are becoming more popular among younger people these days.
On the other hand, older generations still prefer owning their own cars – not to mention the few who buy huge car collections.
Meanwhile, another survey revealed that 40 percent of US electric vehicle buyers actually wanted to go back to combustion engines, proving that people’s preferences are always changing.
Whether this trend continues or not, one thing is clear – the way young people think about cars is definitely shifting.
