Starting out at a yard sale with nothing but a penny, this New Jersey man put his haggling and hustling to the test to trade items for increasing value until he could buy a supercar, and he took a massive risk on a Corvette C4.

Many people have tried this trend of turning a penny into a fortune, but most take shortcuts and use a little bit of outside help to get along.

But one YouTuber has vlogged his progress, putting time and effort into selecting items for trade and finally getting on the car ladder.

Now, he’s settled on a Corvette C4 to be the next fixer-upper and see what value he can get in return.

Trading up from a penny to a supercar

A penny really doesn’t stretch far. Back in 1940, it gave US citizens access to the most advanced road networks in the world. But nowadays, all it gets you is a headache and a defunct Nintendo console.

However, New Jersey content creator JD Montclair is righting this wrong and has been putting his penny to good use.

Starting off at a flea market, he managed to get a soap dispenser for his coin.

From there, traded that up to cologne, headphones, an Atari console, a pair of Birkenstocks, a Ted 2 collectible, a Be@rbrick figure, a pair of child-size sneakers, and a pack of trading cards.

The graft definitely bruised his ego, with rejections across every marketplace you can imagine, but the thought of landing his dream supercar keeps him going.

Finally, after sticking with consoles, the creator ended up buying his first car in this series, a Ford Focus, before detailing it and flipping it for a Toyota Yaris.

Now, he’s traded the Toyota Yaris in for a 1984 Corvette C4, and has taken to YouTube to show fans how much he made from the vehicle.

How much could he make on a Corvette C4?

With no real indication of where his money was up to at that time, the YouTuber decided to sell his Corvette C4 rather than trading it, and invest the money back into the series.

Here, he made a number of tweaks to the car to get it looking killer.

But even then, he continued to face rejection.

Finally, he took a risk to place it on Cars and Bids. The bold move could see him pay a small fee and sell without a reserve price, or it could end up being a stroke of genius with the car being attractive to collectors and modders.

“Now, there’s a chance we might lose a car for $2,000, and we’re going to have to grind our way back up, or we’re going to win so damn big,” he said.

Thankfully, while spending the holiday season with his family, they all watched the final moments of the bidding together, and he came out with $5,500.

The ultimate goal in this series? Well, the journey stops when JD Montclair sits pretty in the comfort of his dream Lexus LC500.

But getting there is still going to be difficult.

“We’re in this dangerous middle ground. The nicer cars have massive issues, and the older ones are just overpriced junk,” he confessed, looking for a new venture.

The next step is to find a salvaged car and use the leftovers to restore it, hopefully continuing this upward trend of profit-making.
