The New York State Police force is adding Mustangs to its fleet, and they’re reportedly being added for a very specific reason.

We’ve seen police forces around the world adding increasingly exotic cars to their line-ups.

The GT’s powerful V8 already makes it a suitable candidate for police duty.

But in the case of the New York State police, they’ve allegedly added Ford Mustang GT muscle cars to serve a special purpose.

Why New York state police are buying Mustangs for their fleet

In our minds, we all have an image of what a police car looks like.

It’s fairly traditional, black and white, and has a flashing red light on the roof.

Whilst it’s certainly not glamorous, it’s iconic in its own right and is instantly recognizable.

But these days, police forces around the world have been branching out with the types of vehicles they add to their fleets.

The police in Dubai alone have an impressive – not to mention expensive – lineup, including a Ferrari Purosangue.

But police are getting similarly fancy in the US, where Florida cops are now doing their jobs in McLaren 720S supercars.

Not to mention the New Jersey police department’s $310,000 Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato that they added to the fleet for a very specific reason.

Now it’s New York’s turn to get an upgrade.

A number of police departments across the US have added Mustangs to their fleets, from North Carolina to Virginia.

Now, New York is following suit – but why?

Somebody on Facebook had a theory after reportedly speaking to an unnamed New York State Trooper.

“Per the trooper I spoke to ( troop K ) they are tired of being dusted in chases even in their V8 powered chargers,” the post read.

“There are several popular YouTubers who make a living running from the cops across the nation and the biggest of them happen to be in NY.

“Let that be a warning to you, a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do, but better come with enough ponies & car control to do what you want to do.”

Have the police confirmed this version of events?

Brian Silvestro, a journalist at The Autopian, reached out to the police for a comment.

Here’s what they said: “The New York State Police will be adding Ford Mustang GTs for traffic enforcement on high-volume interstates and highways.

“Since the Dodge Charger police car is no longer being manufactured, the State Police is moving toward SUVs for patrol vehicles, including the Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer and Chevrolet Tahoe.

“The Mustangs’ will have the speed and handling capabilities necessary for patrol operations and special enforcement details on high-volume interstates and highways, working together with the larger patrol SUVs.

“The NYSP has purchased one 2025 Mustang GT and anticipate attaining some 2026 Mustang GT models.

“The Mustangs should be available for patrol and traffic enforcement sometime next year. Specific details on deployment have not yet been determined.”

So there you have it.

You hardly need to be a criminologist to understand that it would be in the cops’ interest to keep up with suspects who were evading arrest.

As of now, there is one GT within the New York State police force, with more on the way soon.
