There’s a road in North Dakota that’s become famous for swallowing up the toughest off-road vehicles.

Devin Davis has been documenting the treacherous road on his TikTok channel.

It has stopped countless cars in their tracks, and people on the internet can’t get enough of it.

But what is it that makes the ‘Road of Shame’ so formidable?

The United States is home to a vast network of roads that stretches out to be four million miles long.

And among them are some unique roadways.

In Illinois, there’s a road that closes twice a year to allow snakes to cross.

Over in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, there’s a street named after Will Smith.

Down in Nashville, Tennessee, one road has an oddly specific speed limit of 24MPH, but for good reason.

And quirky roads aren’t just limited to the US either.

In Türkiye, there’s a road that plays Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca or Turkish March when cars drive down it.

Well, now it’s North Dakota’s turn in the limelight.

This road wasn’t musical, it wasn’t named after a celebrity, and it wasn’t accommodating reptiles.

No, it was just extremely difficult for any cars to drive down.

This dirt road in North Dakota’s Brakken oil fields has gotten a reputation online as the ‘Road of Shame’.

Most of the vehicles that have driven along have ended up sinking into the mud.

Even Jeeps and Tacomas are no match for it.

The iconic trail has developed something of a following online, including a Facebook group dedicated to documenting the brave few who attempt to drive the road.

Local man Devin Davis is also keeping track of the road, too, sharing videos to his TikTok channel.

With more than 191,000 likes and 21,000 followers, there’s clearly an audience out there for this treacherous road.

He told The Drive that he’d seen more than 300 cars get stuck in the mud over the past 10 years.

And in his years living near the road, he’s learned that it doesn’t discriminate.

Not only do off-roaders fall victim to the mud, but UPS, FedEx trucks, and even tractors are all left with their wheels spinning.

“Even people who know how to drive in the mud, as soon as it gets a little wet, it gets so slippery [that] people slide off the side,” Davis said.

So there you have it, here’s a road to avoid should you ever pay a visit to North Dakota.

Even if you think your off-road vehicle can handle it, it probably can’t.

To paraphrase a famous quote, ‘It’s better to not drive down the Road of Shame and be thought a fool, than to attempt it and remove all doubts.’
