Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison has overtaken Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg to become the second richest person in the world.

Technology company Oracle sells database software and cloud computing, and was co-founded by Ellison in 1977.

It’s the fourth-largest software company in the world, behind Microsoft, Apple, and Alphabet.

The company’s continued success means that Ellison has now overtaken Amazon founder Bezos and Facebook creator Zuckerberg to become the second richest person on the planet.

How Larry Ellison came to be the second richest person in the world

As well as co-founding Oracle, Larry Ellison was CEO for 37 years before stepping down in 2014.

Now, he’s Oracle’s chairman and chief technology officer and holds around 40 percent of the company’s shares.

Oracle has had a surge of success recently, as its stock price jumped 32 percent in June.

According to reports, this boost in share price has helped Ellison add an extra $56 billion to his net worth in June.

This means 80-year-old Ellison is now worth an estimated $279.5 billion, making him the second richest person in the world.

The recent boost to his fortune puts him ahead of Mark Zuckerberg, with an estimated net worth of $250.9bn, and newlywed billionaire Jeff Bezos, who is worth an estimated $235.7bn.

Although Ellison’s fortune sits at a somewhat unfathomable level, he’s still a long way from claiming the top spot.

Tesla boss Elon Musk is officially the world’s richest person with an estimated net worth of $402.1bn, according to Forbes’ real-time billionaires list.

Ellison, who owns his own island, has previously claimed the title of the second richest person in the world on a couple of occasions, first in September last year and then again in December.

Who else is on the billionaire list?

Alongside Elon Musk, Larry Ellison, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos, the fifth spot on the list is taken by Bernard Arnault, who has an estimated net worth of $155.7bn.

Alphabet co-founder Larry Page is worth $146.9bn, which puts him in sixth place, followed by Warren Buffett, with an estimated net worth of $143.3bn.

NVIDIA CEO and president Jensen Huang is seventh on the list thanks to his $142.9bn fortune, putting him ahead of Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, who is worth $142.2bn.

Rounding out the top 10 is Alphabet co-founder Sergey Brin, who has an estimated net worth of $140.4bn.
