How much does it cost to buy a Mercedes?

Answering this question is a little bit like answering the question of how long a piece of string is.

The entire range has a very, very vast gulf in pricing.

The cheapest model you can buy is the A-Class, which starts at around the $35,000 mark.

The most expensive model you can get is a variation of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.

The Maybach S 860 4Matic First Class will cost you a cool $260,000 or so.

Like most car brands, the vast majority of models will be found somewhere in between.

How much does it cost to insure one?

As a general rule, we’re going to refer to the “piece of string” answer above.

As with other manufacturers, it’s all about specifics with this German brand, even where insurance is concerned.

A basic, entry-level A-Class is going to be much cheaper to insure than a C63 AMG.

Generally, Mercedes cars tend to be in the slightly higher insurance brackets.

This is down to their luxury status, as well as the costs of parts and repairs.

In general, insurance for the average model tends to fall around the $1,000-$1,300 per year range.

Is Mercedes maintenance expensive?

Despite being on the more luxury end of the brand scale, Merc maintenance costs might pleasantly surprise you.

Generally, the price is driven by specialty parts, as well as specialized labor.

Mercedes recommend that you service your car, on average, every 8-10,000 miles.

Again, this is a rough guide, but the general cost of maintenance is around $900 per year.

But that rough estimate is according to Mercedes themselves.

Daily driving and fuel costs

Much like with the other cost categories, daily driving costs can vary depending on several things.

For example, if your Mercedes is used for highway driving, you’ll generally tend to get much better gas value.

The fuel type of the car itself can also make a big difference to your bank balance.

If we take a standard C-Class for example, the diesel model averages somewhere between 59 and 63MPG.

By contrast, the petrol variant will average somewhere in the territory of 42 to 45MPG.

If we continue with our C-Class example, then we can work out the cost of gas.

The hatch has a 19-gallon gas tank, and gas costs, on average, $3 per gallon, so the C-Class costs around $57 to fill with gas.

Again, the issue of cost is heavily dependent on other factors, such as whether you have a lead foot.

So, as it turns out, running a Merc may not be as expensive as you thought.

And that’s our Supercar Blondie guide to the costs of owning a Mercedes.
