A passenger who brought his pilot license with him onto a commercial flight ended up having to fly the plane.

Michael Bradley was heading on vacation from Manchester, UK, to Alicante, Spain, when he was informed that the plane would be delayed.

Grabbing his pilot license along with him to the airport, he put in a quick call to the airline’s head office to arrange for him to fly the plane.

This led to his fellow passengers being left astonished when he stood up and announced he would be the new captain.

Passenger with a pilot license announced he was taking the controls

Michael Bradley’s wife had woken him up at 3am with some alarming news.

Their commercial flight from Manchester to Alicante had been hit with a two-hour delay.

Bradley, who works as a pilot for the airline easyJet, was left with a choice to make.

Taking his pilot license with him to the airport, he put in a call to easyJet’s head office.

Telling them of the predicament, he asked if he could fly the plane.

It didn’t take them long to give the go-ahead – ‘a pretty pretty please with a cherry on top’, according to Bradley.

At the start of the commercial flight, Bradley stood up and spoke to the cabin about the situation.

He didn’t look like a standard pilot; in fact, he looked like a normal vacation goer.

A video of his speech was shared on Facebook by fellow passenger Michelle Potts.

“It could only happen to me!! Get to the airport, and our flight is delayed a couple of hours,” Potts recalled.

“Then I happen to look at the original time, and it changed to gate closing! Had to [run] across the airport to get on the flight.

“I asked the guy at the desk what was going on, and he said, ‘Oh, your pilot’s gone missing, but a guy that’s going on your flight is going to fly the plane’.

“Legend!”

Inside the world of pilots

Ever since social media came around, we’ve been seeing a lot more of the day-to-day lives of pilots.

We’ve learned a lot about their lines of work.

For example, did you know that Boeing pilots can’t fly Airbus jets unless they’ve retrained?

And lest we forget, pilots have also revealed which two windows can open on an airplane.

Then there was the pilot who reassured us not to worry about turbulence.

There’s a lot we can learn about pilots.

Even the ones who arrive at airports as passengers on a commercial flight and go back into work mode in a matter of minutes.
