Porsche is gearing up to launch a wireless EV charger for the Cayenne, and it could be an absolute game-changer for electric vehicles.

Until now, EV owners have had to use wall boxes or public charging stations to top up their cars.

However, Porsche has a potentially revolutionary new system up its sleeve.

Launching next year, it will offer a compact wireless EV charger that could make topping up a whole lot easier.

So, how does the Porsche wireless EV charger work?

The upcoming 2026 Porsche Cayenne will be available as an EV and is already setting records

Alongside the new vehicle, Porsche has announced wireless charging for the first time ever, and it seems like it could be revolutionary for the EV industry – think of it like wireless phone charging, but seriously amped up.

To work, the Porsche wireless charging system requires two charging plates: a receiver unit in the vehicle itself, and a floor plate for the garage or parking space.

To begin with, the technology will be offered as an optional extra for the upcoming Porsche Cayenne EV SUV, with the receiver plate installed behind the front axle

“Porsche is currently the only car manufacturer in the world that is going to offer contactless charging, with an innovative 11kW one-box system,” Porsche’s head of charging systems, Christian Holler, said.

The box is 2.3 inches tall, 78 inches wide, and 46 inches long, and is activated via the driver’s phone.

Initially, you’ll need a password to connect the car and the chargers, but Porsche says this will only need to be entered once, after which it will automatically connect via wi-fi.

The charging plate can be mounted onto the floor of your garage, carport, or driveway and is plugged into a power source, offering a charging rate of 11kW.

To use it, you can simply drive over the charging pad and – ta dah! – it will wirelessly connect to the receiver plate and charge your vehicle while it’s parked.

For safety, the charging pad is even able to detect if an animal, such as your pet cat, is lying on the plate and will cut out until it leaves.

Clever, right?

Porsche says it’s also weather and grime-resistant, meaning even if you don’t have sheltered parking, you can still make use of the pad.

The wireless charger is set to be released in Europe next year and is expected to cost around $8,000.

The carmaker is working on wireless charging combined with automatic parking

While the wireless charging unit could be a real game-changer for EVs, Porsche is pushing it a step further and is working on a combination of automatic parking and contactless charging.

The marque says that in the future, Porsche owners may be able to simply drop their car off outside the garage, press a button, and the car will park itself and begin the charging process.

How cool is that?
