Ever wondered how long it takes Porsche to create a masterpiece like the 918 Spyder? Well, it’s about 100 hours and an absolutely mesmerizing process.
Porsche released the limited production hybrid sports car in 2013.
The German carmaker announced that it would be making just 918 units, and confirmed that they had all sold by the end of 2014.
The Porsche 918 Spyder was in production until June 2015, and – as you might expect from Porsche – that production was an impressive operation.

A staggering amount of work went into building a Porsche 918 Spyder
The Porsche 918 Spyder came with a starting price of around $845,000, but some have sold for upwards of $2 million.
The price reflects the incredible amount of work and craftsmanship that went into each and every 918 Spyder that rolled off the production line in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.

Years before the 918 Spyder was officially unveiled to the public, Porsche had been quietly working on building a special 4000-square-meter factory at its Plant 2 site, where the 911 was made.
Plans for the factory were drawn up by the Porsche 918 Spyder Director of Production Michael Drolshagen, who converted a former paint shop into a car lover’s dream factory where a 100-strong team carefully assembled each car by hand.
According to the carmaker, the team building the 918 was made up from men and women from 14 different countries, ranging in age from just 21 to 56, and all boasting years – or in some cases decades – of experience.
The members tasked with building the 918s were hand-picked from the 911 production line, so it was a given that the cars were in safe hands.
The Frame YouTube channel recently shared a behind-the-scenes video of the 918 Spyders being built, and the process is as detailed as you might have suspected.

Employees used a mix of new high-tech tools, like pneumatic torque wrenches, alongside more traditional ones, including vacuum holders to get the windshield in place.
In total, each car took around 100 hours to complete and required contributions from around 250 suppliers.
Why the 918 is an automotive masterpiece
The 918 Spyder is built on a light-weight carbon-fiber monocoque with a hybrid powertrain pairing a 4.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 with two electric motors that can produce a combined output of 887 horsepower.
Porsche said the car could hit 0-62ph in just 2.6 seconds, and 0-124mph in 7.2 seconds, but independent tests found the 918 actually surpassed those figures, recording times of 2.5 seconds and 7.0 seconds respectively.
It’s also a record-breaker.
In 2013, a 918 fitted with the Wissach Package set a Nürburgring lap time of 6:57, beating the previous record by 14 seconds and earning itself a spot in the history books as the first-ever production car to break the 7-minute barrier.
