Porsche has officially started production on the Cayenne Electric, and it’s set to be the most powerful production model the marque has ever made.
Porsche introduced the gas-powered Cayenne back in 2002, with a plug-in hybrid version released in 2014.
Last November, Porsche announced it was launching an all-electric version: aptly called the Cayenne Electric.
Now, the Cayenne Electric has gone into production and it’s set to be an absolute beast.

The Cayenne EV will be the most powerful production Porsche ever
While some high-end carmakers are performing a U-turn when it comes to electrification – we’re looking at you, Lamborghini – Porsche decided to boost its EV offerings with an all-electric version of its popular Cayenne SUV.
As well as the standard Cayenne Electric, Porsche will also be offering the Cayenne Turbo Electric – and the latter will be the most powerful production vehicle in the marque’s history.

The base model will offer up to 422 horsepower, with launch control, and will be able to hit 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds.
However, its much more powerful sibling is good for a staggering 1,156 horsepower with launch control, and can reach 62mph in just 2.5 seconds.
The EV also offers up to 372 miles of range, making for one seriously impressive SUV.
The upcoming all-electric recently went into production at Porsche’s facility in Bratislava, where it shares the production line with the ICE and hybrid Cayenne models.
The EV is also being built using Porsche’s ‘next-generation’ in-house battery modules.
“Through the Cayenne Electric, we are firmly transferring Porsche’s DNA into the future – with our battery modules developed in-house, the highest levels of manufacturing quality and a production line that seamlessly combines combustion engines, hybrid systems and electric powertrains,” Porsche Member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics Albrecht Reimold said.

The future of other Porsche EVs is less clear
Although production of the Porsche Cayenne Electric is going full steam ahead, the future of the long-awaited electric 718 Boxster and Cayman is not so secure.
Back in December, rumors began to suggest that the upcoming 718 EVs were being reworked to integrate gas-powered engines.
And Bloomberg has since reported that the whole project could be scrapped.

According to the report, new Chief Executive Officer Michael Leiters is considering shelving the EVs due to waning interest in electric cars.
The report also noted that reworking the vehicles would be a costly process, although it added that no final decision had been made, so it seems like a case of watching this space.
