After buying a rare abandoned 1980s supercar that turned out to be more than he bargained for, this restorer was shocked to see what was underneath.

When you buy an old car, you expect a few problems.

Especially if it’s been sitting rusting away for 30 years.

This restoration expert is determined to revive a rare and unknown car, but after flipping it, the damage might be too much to handle.

This abandoned 1980s supercar turned out to be much more than was expected

YouTube page Hudson Auto Films is famed for its restorations, previously taking the order of one of the worst, rare sports cars and making it quite a beast.

The latest project on the page has seen them buy an ‘abandoned 1980s supercar’ from Facebook.

It actually turned out to be an ultra-rare British V8 coupe named Carlton Carrera. Only 50 units were made, and of those, reports suggest that only 10 are left in working condition.

Restoring this particular abandoned 1980s supercar is no easy feat, given that Carlton ceased operations in 1984 and spare parts are almost non-existent.

After spending months cleaning, rendering, and creating 3D-printed bodywork pieces, the YouTube personality has now flipped it for the first time and is seeing what’s going on underneath the surface.

It’s not pretty.

Rust had taken over, and the floor was crumbling to pieces. But as the identification of the vehicle is printed on it, the metal plates are crucial in the restoration, if he ever chooses to sell or drive it.

What’s next for the Carlton Carrera?

Well, sharing a name with a Porsche should give this car a lot of hope. But the state of the damage doesn’t breed positivity.

Still, the YouTuber remains positive – if a rotting and rusty Porsche Carrera can be revived, so can the Carlton Carrera.

With the main chassis and supporting metal remaining solid, maintaining the VIN number, he now plans on welding new sheets to the floor and restoring the original pieces in the best way he can.

Not only will that keep its legal identity, it will also preserve the car’s history.

Next up is work on the engine, which has already proven problematic.

But it looks like this rare abandoned 1980s supercar is on the right track.
