When we talk about some of the rarest supercars in the world, it’s the exclusivity that contributes to the thrill.
But some machines are so rare that spotting one in real life is about as likely as finding a unicorn on the freeway.
These ultra-rare vehicles aren’t just expensive – they’re historically significant and technically groundbreaking.
From one-off design studies to legendary race cars, here are 12 of the rarest supercars in the world that you’ll probably never see on the road.
1. One of the rarest supercars in the world: Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic (1936)
Only four of these beauties were ever built, and just three survive today.
The 1936 Type 57SC Atlantic is widely considered one of the most beautiful cars ever created, with its distinctive riveted dorsal seam.
Its rarity and history have made it one of the most valuable cars in existence, with one example estimated to be worth more than $100 million.

2. McLaren Solus GT
The McLaren Solus GT started life as a Gran Turismo Vision concept before becoming a real-life, track-only hypercar.
With only 25 units being built, it’s powered by a screaming naturally aspirated V10.
Its extreme aerodynamics and video game origins make it one of the rarest and coolest McLarens ever.

3. Aston Martin DBR1/1
The DBR1 is a legend, winning Le Mans in 1959.
Only five chassis were ever produced, and the DBR1/1 was the very first.
It holds the record as the most expensive British car ever sold at auction, fetching over $22 million.

4. Lamborghini Egoista
Designed as a one-off concept to celebrate Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary, the Egoista is unlike anything else.
It looks more like a fighter jet than a car, with a single-seat cockpit and wild angular bodywork.
Built just once, it remains locked away in Lamborghini’s private museum.

5. Ferrari 250 GTO (1962)
Arguably the most famous collector’s car in the world, only 36 250 GTOs were made between 1962 and 1964.
With its racing pedigree and stunning design, it’s the holy grail for Ferrari enthusiasts.
In 2018, one example sold for $48.4 million at auction, making it one of the most valuable cars ever.

6. Koenigsegg CCGT (2007)
The Koenigsegg CCGT was built to comply with GT1 racing regulations, but before it could compete, the rules were changed.
As a result, only one CCGT was ever made, and remains a fascinating ‘what could have been’ moment in Koenigsegg’s history.

7. Bentley S2 Continental (1961)
The Bentley S2 Continental is the rarest of the rare, with only a handful of coachbuilt versions ever produced.
Its combination of luxury, exclusivity, and old-school British craftsmanship make it a true collector’s dream.
Today, surviving examples are rarely seen outside of concours events.

8. Porsche 914/8
Built in the late 1960s, only two Porsche 914/8s were ever made.
One was gifted to Ferry Porsche for his 60th birthday, and the other was a test mule for development.
With a flat-eight engine shoehorned into a tiny mid-engine body, it’s one of the quirkiest and rarest Porsches ever.

9. Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé
Regarded as one of the most valuable cars in the world, in 1955 two Uhlenhaut Coupés were built – and they remain the only ones ever made.
With a top speed of 180mph, it was one of the fastest road cars of its era.
In 2022, one sold privately for $143 million, cementing its status as a legend.

10. BMW M3 GTR
Built to dominate American Le Mans racing in the early 2000s, the BMW M3 GTR was powered by a rare V8 engine.
Just 10 road-going versions were ever built for homologation.
With its motorsport pedigree and insane scarcity, it’s one of BMW’s rarest creations – and one of the rarest supercars in the world.

11. Maserati MC12 Versione Corse
Only 12 MC12 Versione Corse models were built in 2006 as track-only cars.
With around 744 horsepower and extreme aerodynamics, it’s one of the rarest Maseratis ever made.

12. Tesla Roadster (First Generation)
While Teslas are now everywhere, the original Roadster is surprisingly rare.
Only about 2,450 were built between 2008 and 2012, and they laid the groundwork for the EV revolution.
The Tesla Roadster’s rarity, historical importance, and growing collector demand put it firmly on this list.
