Slated as the ‘greatest car ever’ by some of the most avid supercar enthusiasts around, here’s why the Lamborghini Murciélago LP670‑4 SV is illegal in all 50 US states.

Most car fanatics will have heard of the Lamborghini Murciélago.

But the upgraded LP670-4 SV is an ultra-rare upgrade spec worth over $3 million, especially when you find the unicorn manuals.

And while the Lamborghini Murciélago LP670‑4 SV might still hold the torch as the last true analog V12 Raging Bull, in America, it’s about as useful as your common bicycle. Less, perhaps.

How the Lamborghini Murciélago LP670‑4 SV became illegal

Some cars just aren’t made to be taken away from their home. The Cybertruck, for example, appears destined to be landlocked to North America as its repeated attempts to crack Europe have been rebutted.

Likewise, the vintage Italian finery that is the Lamborghini Murciélago LP670‑4 SV was meant to stay in Europe.

Only seven of the SVs were made with a manual stick shift, and one had found its way into the arms of US personality Supercar Ron.

However, he can’t take it on the road because this EU-spec doesn’t comply with the Environmental Protection Agency standards.

The cars can’t fall into the loopholes either; it doesn’t comply with the Show or Display exemption, the 25-year rule hasn’t come into play yet, and Lamborghini won’t issue a Letter of Compliance.

The only way, at the moment, to have the Europe spec is through a temporary import visa, which allows one trip to the US a year.

Lambo did make the Lamborghini Murcielago LP670 SVs in the US, but they come with an automatic transmission, typical of the country’s driving habits.

Why is it the greatest car ever, then?

Well, this is the bold claim of Ed Bolian, the founder of VinWiki. While he’s been known to buy and sell common Murciélagos for outrageous profits, the LP670‑4 SV is a level above the rest.

“I think it is everything that a supercar is supposed to be, and this is the best one on Earth,” he said.

“Man, when it’s a stick, it is just perfect – it’s so smooth, it’s so amazing.

“Would I rather have it than a $10–20 million car like a McLaren F1 or a really special Ferrari? I don’t know… I might. It is that good.”

Bolian even has a wild range of supercars in his own collection, so much so that he can afford to rip the rubber wheels off a Bugatti Veyron by doing donuts in a car park on a fine weekday afternoon.

The title of ‘greatest car ever’ is heavy praise for the Lambo, but you’ll have to head to Europe if you want to use it.
