To celebrate the World Championships of the longest-standing video game of all time, Red Bull has created the largest game of Tetris ever with 4,000 drones lighting up the Dubai skyline.

Tetris is the godfather of all games, coming way before Mario and his rabble of Nintendo nutcrackers, and has become the second-biggest selling series ever.

Nowadays, though, Tetris has moved far beyond the black and white mobile game we may remember on a Nokia phone.

These days, it’s played on 4,000 drones in the sky for all of Dubai to see.

How the largest game of Tetris was made

Having been a stalwart sponsor and tournament organiser in the professional gaming esports space, Red Bull typically puts on a huge spectacle.

Known for its high-octane stunts in lots of industries, the popular content team has now created the largest ever game of Tetris to celebrate the World Finals.

With finalists and crowds gathered in Dubai, the team organized 4,000 drones in total to light up the skyline and host a real-time interactive game.

The drones, weighing around 249g and producing a 16-million color range with 40W LED lights, had a live feed to one player on the ground who was moving the shapes and clearing rows.

A live orchestra created the atmosphere on the ground, as the live show was played in front of thousands, and was visible from several kilometers.

Tetris world champion got the prize of a lifetime

The World Championship was a massive event with over seven million participants. From regional qualifiers in 60 countries, the Finals came down to 16 of the most efficient block organizers on the planet.

Using gravity shifts, speed boosts, and special power-ups that modify the playfield, it was 19-year-old Fehmi Atalar from Turkey who came out on top.

His prize was to be the first person to play the game on the drone ensemble, in a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The young man had never competed in Tetris before and was shocked by how far he advanced through every stage.

Aside from the teenager who completed Tetris, this might be the best gaming experience of all time.
