Man drove his Renault Symbol up to 999,999km and its odometer did the most anti-climactic thing when he filmed it reaching 1,000,000km

This guy drove his Renault Symbol for 1 million kilometers, but he was probably expecting a different ‘finale’ to this car’s epic journey.

If you treat them right, some cars can last a very long time.

But part of the fun when you drive them for hundreds of thousands of kilometers is to see the number on the odometer.

Unfortunately, this guy didn’t get the satisfaction he was anticipating.

Here’s what happened when this Renault reached 1,000,000 kilometers

Reaching 1 million kilometers with the same car is relatively rare but not unheard of.

With the right car and proper maintenance, it can be done.

Some people have also done it with electric cars.

The problem for this Renault Symbol owner was that his car’s digital odometer wasn’t designed for a seventh digit.

So when he hit 999,999 and drove that final kilometer, the display didn’t know what to do.

Instead of ticking over to 1,000,000, it simply reset to zero.

This is actually pretty common.

For a combination of technical and practical reasons, it is easier for manufacturers to configure a six-figure odometer.

And 99 times out of 100, no one notices because most people don’t get to 1 million.

As for this guy, we can probably imagine the conversations with his friends.

“No, I swear, I did reach 1 million, it’s just that the odometer went back to zero.”

The highlanders of the car world

Several drivers have managed to put 1 million miles or more on their odometers.

There’s a Tesla owner in Germany who famously drove his Model S more than 1.1 million miles.

He had to replace the motor 13 times and the battery pack four times, but the car is still running.

Then there’s the equally famous case of the Greek taxi driver who drove his Mercedes for 2.8 million miles.

But even that takes second place to the Guinness World Record-certified Volvo that belonged to Irv Gordon.

Gordon bought his Volvo new in the 1960s and then drove it for over 3 million miles.

Even Volvo was impressed.

They celebrated his milestone by giving him a free car, and of course he ended up putting 450,000 miles on that one as well.
