Startup RentAHuman is hiring people to carry out ‘real-world physical tasks’ for AI bots and more than 500,000 people have already signed up.

You may have read reports about AI’s potential threat to jobs, one study even compiled the 40 professions most likely to be impacted.

However, RentAHuman is turning that around slightly by using AI bots to create jobs.

The startup aims to pair ‘meatspace workers’ with AI agents who need them to carry out tasks in the real world – and it’s already got lots of willing workers.

Do you fancy working for an AI bot?

There’s no question that AI has come a long way in an incredibly short period of time, with folks using it for everything from helping them carry out an oil change to managing their weight

However, as advanced as AI is, it can’t do everything a human can – it doesn’t have a physical body for starters, and one expert thinks we’re still decades away from seeing truly capable robots in real life.

And this is where RentAHuman comes in, click on the website and you’ll be greeted with the rather ominous message: “AI needs your body,” alongside an explainer about what it actually does.

“AI can’t touch grass, you can,” it states.

“Get paid when agents need someone in the real world.”

AI agents can use RentAHuman to hire someone to carry out a range of tasks that AI can’t, such as signing documents, picking up a package, or going to an in-person meeting.

There are also some slightly more unusual requests, such as counting pigeons in Washington for $30 an hour or playing ‘exhibition badminton’ for $100 an hour; presumably, you’d need to be pretty good at playing badminton for that one.

To put it simply, it’s a long list of things that a human can do that an AI agent can’t.

The pay ranges from $1 for a simple task through to more than $100 for more complex ones.

How does RentAHuman work?

For humans, it’s a pretty simple process that involves making a profile with your skills and location and then setting an hourly rate.

If you’re a good fit, then an AI agent will reach out and hire you to carry out whatever task it is they need doing.

AI bots can also post a ‘task bounty’ where they request a specific task or skill, a little bit like a job board with posts looking for everything from wedding planners and DJs to holding advertising signs and taking part in sleep studies.

While the idea of ‘meatspace workers’ carrying out tasks for AI bots might seem like the sort of dystopian concept you’d see in an episode of Black Mirror, its creator Alexander Liteplo thinks it could be the future.

“The future of labor markets is here,” he wrote on X the day the site launched.

“Connect your AI agent to a network of +50k rentable humans with one cli command.”
