Rolls-Royce said the Spectre underwent 1.5 million miles of testing and that’s not even the half of it

Every car gets tested extensively before production, even more so if it’s a Rolls-Royce Spectre.

But when the British marque began working on the Spectre, its first electric vehicle, they knew they had to up the ante even more.

So by the time the Spectre was ready for production, it had already undergone 400 years’ worth of testing.

Rolls-Royce test drivers spent some 50,000 hours at the wheel of the car, equivalent to around 400 years of (simulated) use.

In total, they put together 1.5 million miles or 2.5 million kilometers.

The attention to detail was extraordinary

As per usual, the car was tested in all kinds of environments and weather conditions, from -40°C to +50°C, from the Arctic Circle to the scorching desert heat of the Sahara.

This is routine for automakers.

However, what isn’t routine is the amount of time Rolls-Royce spent analyzing feedback.

In total, the company analyzed and tuned every one of the car’s 141,200 digital sender-receiver relations and 25,000 performance-related features.

Translated, it means they analyzed over 160,000 individual signals the car’s ‘brain’ sent back to see if they could do better.

Engineers also tested several features that are definitely Rolls-Royce specific.

They fitted gyroscopic and G-force sensors to make sure the doors open and close quietly and effortlessly, regardless of whether the car is parked uphill or downhill.

Tests were carried out to make sure the car was quiet enough to park alongside a waiting helicopter and have a conversation without having to raise your voice.

An unrivaled car

The Rolls-Royce Spectre, for now, doesn’t really have competition.

Every potential rival is either too sporty or not at the same level in terms of luxury.

The $300,000 Cadillac Celestiq could, in theory, be called a rival but Cadillac isn’t exactly in the same league as Rolls-Royce these days.

Rolls-Royce Spectre performance and spec

Every element of the Rolls-Royce Spectre is fully customizable, including the coachline, which is famously done by one person only.

In terms of performance, the Spectre is powered by electric motors, putting out 577 horsepower in total, and propelling the car from a standstill to 0-97 km/h (0-60 mph) in 4.4 seconds, which is not bad for a car weighing nearly three tons.

The range varies a lot depending on the owner’s driving style, but it’s between 260 and 290 miles or 420 – 460 km.
