The Smart Car is up there with the most compact cars on the planet, but as the industry pivots to a greener future, the electric ‘smart #2’ is on the way, with a world premiere planned next year.

First hitting the roads in 1998, Smart is approaching its three-decade benchmark one wheel at a time.

The boxy car has been a revelation for city driving, taking inspiration from K-cars in Japan and taking over European streets, specifically where parking is at a premium.

But having pivoted to some larger models in the recent past, the smart #2 is rolling back the years with a signature look, but with an extremely modern electric platform.

The second generation of Smart Car is coming as a new EV

Despite the Smart Car having somewhat of a meme status throughout Europe – proving to be a funny venture for celebrity athletes like Shaquille O’Neal and John Cena – the brand has become quite the hit in busy cities.

With a clearly outlined purpose, the brand has today announced that the smart #2 is coming, and the early testing of its Electric Compact Architecture has proven to be a hit.

Keeping the two-door, two-seat configuration, smart #2 is focusing heavily on its driving experience, rather than the functionality of the small body.

Testing has refined the agility, structural strength, brake system performance, crash safety performance, suspension durability, and battery performance.

Currently, Smart offers three electric vehicles, all with a much bigger chassis, but this new compact EV will be a homage to its foundations.

The Mercedes-Benz-owned group believes the smart #2 will offer an ‘urban driving experience that is unlike anything else.’

smart #2 set to be premiered in Germany next year

So far, the only images of the smart #2 come with the typical camouflage that automakers use to shroud their designs with mystery.

However, the lid will be lifted on this fun box-type in ‘late 2026’, as the carmakers promise that it is on schedule for a premiere in the twilight months.

The brand has been making a number of wild improvements to the ‘smartness’ of the Smart car, and smart #2 might be the smartest yet. Smartie pants.
