Retired lieutenant colonel built incredible motorhome from a Cadillac Eldorado due to his dislike of big RVs

These days, more and more people are building their own RVs and motorhomes and embarking on their ‘van life’ but few people have ever built something as cool as the Star Streak II.

That’s because the Star Streak II – yes, it’s the second one – was built by retired Lieutenant Colonel Paul Jones using the framework of a Cadillac Eldorado.

Seriously, one look at his fantastic creation and you’ll know exactly what we mean.

It’s a true piece of automotive genius.

The Star Streak was created out of dissatisfaction

Paul Jones had a dream, and he knew how to make it a reality.

It all started with a grumble.

Back in the 1980s, Jones had retired from the US Air Force and wanted to set about enjoying his extra free time.

Like many people, he wanted to indulge his love of the outdoors, and decided that he wanted a motorhome.

However, his expectations weren’t met by anything on the market at the time.

Most of the luxury RVs he saw were too big to fit into his garage, and the smaller models weren’t up to his desired standard.

Necessity – as they say – is the mother of invention.

So, he set about inventing his own dream motorhome.

Putting his expertise to good use

Jones had a background in aeronautical engineering, having risen to a high rank in the USAF.

Because of that knowhow, building an RV must have seemed like a relatively simple task.

But – as we’ve already covered – this isn’t just any RV.

Of course, there are RVs on the market like the Dembell that are bigger, or ones like the Concorde Liner that are better equipped, but none of them have had this much love put into them.

Jones’ first build was based on a 1971 Oldsmobile Toronado – the Star Streak I – and boasted the amenities of a much bigger RV.

He built it in a garage, but built it to the highest possible spec – sort of like a one-man motorhome Mansory, if you will.

Once he racked up 100,000 miles in the first vehicle, he decided to up the ante.

The Star Streak II saw Jones perfect his art

The second model started out as a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado, featuring the powertrain of another Toronado – boasting a 215 horsepower V8.

It’s long – bearing Caddy tailfins – and tall, but still a lot smaller than others.

Everything was custom, from the top to the bottom, and every small detail was taken care of.

Inside, there is a kitchen, a double-basin sink, and a dinette that converts to a bed.

Also, it looks incredible, doesn’t it?
