The 10-80-10 rule, which was favored by Apple founder Steve Jobs, could come in very useful when it comes to using AI at work.

The late CEO has a solid reputation for being a legendary leader, from his unique ‘beer test’ interview method to how he went about rewarding honesty from his employees.

According to those close to him, Jobs liked to implement the 10-80-10 rule when it came to work.

And it turns out that the same rule can be implemented when using AI in the workplace.

Apple founder Steve Jobs followed the 10-80-10 rule, here’s how it works

There are hundreds of different rules, mantras, and mottos that top execs and business moguls use to try to improve their work-life.

And according to Inc, Jobs favored the 10-80-10 rule.

Put simply, the rule means spending 10 percent of your time communicating your idea or vision of what you want to create, then 80 percent of your time is spent allowing others to help push that idea forward and onto the next stage, and the final 10 percent is used for honing and perfecting it.

Tech entrepreneur Dan Martell breaks it down into 10 percent ideation, 80 percent execution, and 10 percent refinement and integration.

In real life, the 10-80-10 isn’t set in stone; it’s more of a rough guide on how much time you should commit to each part of the process.

So, spending some time coming up with ideas, investing more time into those who have the skills to bring those ideas to life, and then polishing it all up at the end.

The 10-80-10 rule clearly helped Jobs get the job done when he was at Apple, and now some experts believe it can also be used when working with AI to get the most out of it.

And here’s how it could work when using AI

With AI technology advancing at a rapid pace, we’ve seen it popping up in more and more industries, from medicine to astronomy.

As it’s implemented in more workplaces, businesses, and individuals are trying to pin down best practices for AI.

And Empire Portfolio Group CMO Alan Magee has recently made an interesting case for the use of the Steve Jobs-approved 10-80-10 rule.

In a recent interview with Business Insider, he said that while the rule was originally designed to get the most out of talented humans, it can be used with AI.

“There’s a 10-80-10 rule that’s floating around in the marketing world: 10 percent human input, 80 percent AI execution, 10 percent human review,” he told the publication.

Much like with the original concept, these aren’t strict time limits, but help showcase how AI can be used.

A person comes up with the idea or concept and sets the parameters, then AI comes in to do a lot of the heavy lifting, and the human steps back in at the end to neaten everything up and make sure no AI hallucinations have crept in.
