Mark Zuckerberg gave his multi-millionaire neighbors noise-cancelling headphones as a way to turn down the volume from the building of his $110 million compound in a move of pure neighborly spirit.
The Meta boss’ Palo Alto, California, compound has reportedly grown into an enormous 11-home setup that has brought years of disruption to the usually peaceful Crescent Park neighborhood.
Residents in the ultra-wealthy area have apparently been handed a string of gifts, from Krispy Kreme doughnuts and chocolates to sparkling wine, as staff tried to smooth things over.
But for some neighbors, the headphones became the most awkward gift of all because they seemed to admit the noise problem without actually fixing it.

According to reports, tech billionaire Mark Zuckerberg has spent more than $110 million building up the sprawling collection of properties since 2011.
The surrounding residents are said to have grown tired of relentless drilling, truck traffic, blocked driveways, and general upheaval.

In a neighborhood where the median sale price was reportedly about $6.3 million in July 2025, small peace offerings were never likely to land as grand gestures.
Instead, the idea of handing out noise-cancelling headphones struck some locals as almost comically on the nose.
Rather than calming tensions, it seems to have become a symbol of just how bizarre life can get when one billionaire’s mega-project takes over the block.

The construction noise from his $110M home has become impossible to ignore
The compound itself sounds more like a luxury resort than a family home.
Five houses have allegedly been combined into a gated complex, complete with guest houses, gardens, a pickleball court, and a hydrofloor pool.
The compound is home to a seven-foot statue of Zuck’s wife, Priscilla Chan, while neighbors also point to more than 7,000 square feet of underground space they refer to as bunkers.

One property has also reportedly been turned into a private school for the couple’s children, something locals say does not fit neighborhood zoning rules.
Even with efforts like quieter electric security vehicles, rideshare reimbursements for staff, and event notices, the mood in Crescent Park is still said to be tense.

Palo Alto council member Greer Stone has reportedly criticized loopholes around local zoning and said he is working on legislation to stop a repeat of the situation.
So while doughnuts and headphones might sound like a quirky billionaire fix, neighbors seem to want something much simpler and harder to put a price on: peace and quiet.
