Not even being dearly departed can stop social media activity, as new Meta patents suggest that a new AI software could keep your pages populated with content after you’ve passed away.
Like us, the little handheld device you’re currently reading from is probably subjected to Instagram and Facebook activity.
Whether it’s updating fans with the latest selfie, debating the NFL off-season drama, or following the latest coffee trends – we spend hours a day on social platforms.
But your screen time might not come to an abrupt end if you pass away, as a new AI software could be set to learn your posting and interaction habits and keep up the activity from beyond the grave.

New Meta patents aim to fulfill Mark Zuckerberg’s wish to immortalize people on social media
Back in 2023, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg claimed that virtual reality could be the ticket to bringing back loved ones and reconnecting with a 3D avatar that has learned their personality.
The AI learning tools have been deployed by Meta before, through the new Smart Glasses that taught this business guru some new dad skills.
Zuckerberg said Meta will eventually ‘have the capacity’ to recreate people in AI and interact with memories of loved ones.
“If someone has lost a loved one and is grieving, there may be ways in which being able to interact or relive certain memories could be helpful,” he said.
New Meta patents suggest this is spilling over to social media, too.
Pointed out by Business Insider, a patent filed in 2023 was given the seal of approval in December 2025, which intends to ‘simulate the user’ after ‘severe and permanent’ reasons for not being online.

The AI software ‘may be used for simulating the user when the user is absent from the social networking system,’ the patent reads.
It revealed that ‘much more severe and permanent’ absences could see the AI model take over for prolonged periods, such as if they died.
It will continue using the same personality patterns, immortalizing social media users within the Meta platforms.

AI social media accounts are already a recipe for disaster, though
Scary as it sounds, AI software is already active on social media, and it’s gone as well as you could have imagined.
Previous billion-dollar platforms like ‘IRL’ have shut down after bots plagued the site, outnumbering real people by 95 percent.
But even with improved AI capabilities in 2026, a brand-new social media site dedicated to AI bots has become a breeding ground for the artificial accounts to plan the purge of humankind.

All of this human replication is a daunting prospect, and even Mark Zuckerberg claimed that it crosses into a grey area where the use of such programs should ‘ultimately be your call.’
But that didn’t stop him from paying an AI engineer $200 million to leave Apple and continue developing Meta’s projects.
