When heading through TSA airport security, you might not think twice about putting your phone into one of the bins, but some travel experts have warned against it.
Modern technology means that things like boarding passes, plane tickets, and flight itineraries can all be easily stored on our phones.
And while this can make traveling easier and more straightforward, it also means that if you lose your phone, you could end up in a pickle.
So if you’d rather not get your next trip off to a frustrating start, then heed the advice of frequent fliers and travel experts who recommend not dropping your phone into a TSA bin.

This is why you should reconsider dropping your phone into a TSA bin
Even the most laid back of people can find themselves getting a little flustered when traveling through an airport.
Long queues, flight delays, and last-minute changes to gate numbers can all leave you feeling on edge – and that’s before you even get to airport security.

But all of these distractions can mean that thieves could grab your phone or other valuables when your mind is elsewhere.
Travel expert Alyssa Nelson told Travel + Leisure that she had her phone stolen as she passed through airport security back in 2010.
Fortunately,, she was able to get it back.
However, that wasn’t the case for travel advisor Veronika Romane, who had her expensive camera stolen while going through security last year.
“It was a painful loss, mainly because of the memories captured on it,” she told the publication.
After realizing her camera had been taken, she alerted airport security but was told that there was no CCTV in that area of the airport.
And it’s not just theft you need to be aware of.
Good old-fashioned forgetfulness can also play a part – particularly if you’re rushing.
Travel writer Eileen Cotter Wright told Travel + Leisure that she ‘sprinted’ through the airport to catch her flight but forgot to grab her laptop, only realizing she had left it behind after takeoff.
Here’s what you should do instead
Of course, there’s no getting around the TSA when flying.

But there are smarter places to keep your phone and other valuables so you don’t lose them.
The trio of travel experts told Travel + Leisure it was a far better idea to place them inside a zip pocket of a case or a bag, rather than directly into the bin.
One of the frequent fliers also recommended using several bins, and keeping your most valuable items for the last one, so that they are unattended for the least amount of time.
You can also get trackers, like Apple’s AirTags, to give yourself some extra peace of mind, if items do go missing.
