Born and bred in America, the legendary EV maker Tesla is looking to craft its upcoming cars with homegrown materials, as it moves away from using Chinese parts.
It’s been brewing like a powder keg, but the tension between Chinese EVs and Tesla has taken another twist.
The American EV maker has benefited undeniably from the tariffs on Chinese parts and legislation that stops the likes of BYD and Xiaomi from selling vehicles in the US.
But in a bid to completely separate itself from Chinese engineering, reports suggest that the brand is going ‘All-American’ with its future builds.

Tesla is reportedly moving to homegrown parts only
In the last few years, Chinese EV technology has surpassed any other market in the world.
The country has found ways of producing car parts cheaper than most places, and has recently begun to show that they’re industry leaders in quality, too.
It’s led to nearly every Western brand placing its faith in parts sourced from China, such as batteries.
But to break to mould, Tesla has reportedly been actively removing all Chinese reliance from its cars, and has been asking suppliers to remove any products from the country.
According to the Wall Street Journal, this started earlier in 2025, and the brand hopes to have no Chinese parts in its vehicle production process by 2027.

WSJ reports that the company is doing so because the tariffs placed on Chinese parts by the US government have made manufacturing more expensive, and the constant fluctuation is impacting the pricing of the EVs.
This is for all American-produced cars in its fleet, with the company still allowing Chinese parts in the production of its cars in Europe, and those made in its factory plant in Shanghai, China.
The ongoing joust with Chinese rivals
The American brand has stayed loyal to its own parts for as long as it has been making electric vehicles, despite an overwhelming pressure to switch to lithium-ion batteries sourced from China’s groundbreaking deposits.
But it all feeds into the ongoing rivalry between Tesla and BYD, with the Chinese brand overtaking the American company as the best-selling EV maker in the world.
Recently, the Model 3 and Model Y Standard variants were introduced to try and combat the cheaper alternatives from BYD, and the homegrown cars have already proven to be quite popular as an entry point EV.

It’s not known exactly what parts of a Tesla car are currently sourced from China.
However, given that the brand appears to be finding ways to make the cars with parts made elsewhere without losing performance, it’s likely that this will only be aesthetic pieces, rather than anything mechanical.
