Tesla was just granted yet another interesting patent which appears to be for the Roadster.
We’ve been talking about this vehicle for years, and yet there are still new elements that we’re discovering almost on a weekly basis.
Musk said this would be the ‘most memorable product launch’ of all time.
And the latest patent explains why.
The reason why the Tesla Roadster unveil was delayed again
The Roadster was supposed to be unveiled on October 1 after a nine-year wait, but the American automaker decided to postpone the announcement again.
This time, Tesla did it for a surprisingly banal reason: the weather.
But the fact that it was delayed because of bad weather is expected is telling.
Because the manufacturer said that the launch ‘must be held outdoors’.
And the new patent may have something to do with it.
This is what the new patent is for
The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently granted Tesla a patent for an ‘Electric Fan Car’ system.
Apparently, the patent describes using four electrically driven ducted fans mounted side by side in the vehicle’s rear diffuser, separated by vertical strakes.
An underbody inlet sweeps up into an internal duct leading to the rear fans, and the system is apparently powered directly by the car’s primary high-voltage battery.
What’s interesting is that the patent originally illustrated a Model S – a car that’s no longer in production – which presumably suggests that engineers have been testing this system for years.
The Roadster will come with ‘rockety’ stuff
A couple of years ago, in an interview with ex-CNN anchor Don Lemon, Elon Musk said the Roadster would feature ‘rockety’ stuff.
Musk has often hinted at a collab between SpaceX and Tesla for years, but we only recently found out what that actually entails.
Apparently, the new Roadster will use cold-gas thrusters, which would allow it to ‘hover’.
Some people speculate that this is exactly the reason behind the delay.
People are saying that Tesla needs ideal weather to showcase the Roadster’s ability to hover over Lake Waco, in Texas.
If that happens, it will have been worth the wait.
