Riding a motorcycle comes with a very unique experience on the roads, and that includes using hand signals, like when a motorcyclist points up towards the sky.

Some would argue that riding a motorcycle offers more of a connection between human and machine.

One thing that is unanimous, though, is the importance of communication between and for motorcyclists.

And this is what it means when a motorcyclist points up towards the sky.

Motorcyclist points up towards the sky? Get in line

If you’ve ever seen a motorcyclist on the road, then you’ll likely have noticed some things.

Because motorcycle riders don’t have indicators, they often gesture with their arms.

They especially rely heavily on signals and gestures when traveling in large groups.

One of the most common gestures you may have seen is a motorcyclist pointing towards the sky.

There’s actually an interesting meaning behind the glove pointing, too.

When a motorcyclist points to the sky, they are telling their group to get in line.

But the signal doesn’t end there. In fact, the number of fingers used is very important as well.

For example, if a motorcyclist at the front uses one finger, it indicates to ride in single file.

If they use two fingers, it tells the riders behind to ride side-by-side on the road.

Communication can literally be life or death

Being able to communicate with motorcycles is very important for our two-wheeled friends.

Unlike car drivers, motorcyclists do not have four solid walls to protect them on the roads.

Instead, motorcyclists live or get seriously injured according to the helmets and leathers they wear.

This makes good road communication a literal lifesaver for those on two wheels.

Of course, motorcycle riders have their part to play in traveling safely as well.

Bright colored helmets and clothing help them to be more visible on the road.

Riding at reasonable speeds is also very important.

The ability to stop or get themselves out of trouble is often dependent on the speed they are riding at.

So obeying the laws of the road, as well as understanding communication, helps keep riders safe.
