Tom Cruise and fast cars go together like popcorn and movies.
So when word got out that the Top Gun star once owned a 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, fans and car collectors alike revved their engines.
While the star didn’t hang onto the sleek sports car for long, its Hollywood connection has helped it cruise into automotive lore.
Sometimes, all it takes is a brush with stardom to turn a classic into a legend.

Cruise bought the 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa in April 1986, just before his Hollywood stardom hit full throttle with the release of Top Gun.
This was probably a big purchase for the up-and-coming actor at the time. Although it pales in comparison to the $20 million private jet that he currently owns,
The car was a perfect blend of German engineering and ’80s cool, featuring a 3.2-liter flat-six engine and five-speed manual transmission.

It was also equipped with European-spec H4 headlights, integrated front fog lights, 16-inch Fuchs wheels, and a removable black Targa roof panel.
However, by February 1987, the actor had moved on. Which meant that this car didn’t end up in his $50 million car collection.
In the end, the car was only in Cruise’s possession for 10 months.
Despite its short stay in Cruise’s garage, the Porsche made a lasting impression.
It eventually landed in Illinois by 2012, before being put up for auction in 2021.
On Bring a Trailer, it sold for a healthy $86,000.
Not just because it was a pristine Targa, but because it had that extra sprinkle of Hollywood magic.
The car underwent a refurbishment in 2020, including a bare-metal repaint, an interior refresh, and a drivetrain rebuild.

In the end, Tom Cruise’s brief fling with this 911 Targa proves that even the shortest celebrity relationship can turn a great car into a star in its own right.
And while Cruise may have moved on to crazier stunts in the Mission: Impossible series, this Porsche continues to turn heads.
