Toshiba’s new battery has an impressive charge time

EV technology is advancing all the time, and thanks to new research, vehicles are getting better.

You’d often associate Toshiba with TVs or other devices, but now the tech giant has developed a new type of battery suitable for EVs.

It’s called the SCiB, and it’s a fast-charging lithium-ion battery, with the company claiming it’ll reach a mighty 80 percent in just six minutes.

The battery is set to be suitable for all kinds of vehicles, including electric cars, buses, and even ‘stationary applications’.

“The new product features an aluminum baseplate that dissipates approximately twice the heat of current modules,” explained Toshiba.

The batteries are also rechargeable and have other features, including an extended life and a ‘low temperature performance’.

The battery also has an impressive 20,000 charge-discharge lifecycle and is set to have high safety standards, too.

So, this could set a new benchmark for battery strength in the EV sphere – only time will tell.

What really makes a good EV battery?

The EV battery is the powerhouse that ensures the vehicle performs well.

And, thanks to the advancements happening all the time, electric cars are some of the most high-tech automobiles about.

Most of the good news comes from China, too, with companies like BYD announcing that it has developed an EV battery that charges in five minutes, which is very good news for impatient drivers.

In fact, waiting at a Supercharger could be a thing of the past if Toshiba’s battery takes charge.

For now, though, it’s all systems go as the battery will be showcased in Bangkok at ASIA Sustainable Energy Week 2025 at the start of July.
