Newly released figures show that almost half of all Toyota vehicles sold in the United States during the third quarter were hybrid cars.

When it comes to hybrid cars, Toyota is quite a trailblazer.

It launched the ever-popular Prius in 1997 – the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle.

Almost three decades on, almost half of the cars it sells are now electrified cars.

Figures show more than 44% of US sales are electrified cars

While some carmakers have leaned into creating all-electrics, Toyota has, for now, almost exclusively stuck with hybrids when it comes to electrification.

Across its two brands, its only fully-electric models are the bZ4X and Lexus RZ.

In comparison, it offers a bunch of hybrid models, including the Prius, the Corolla Hybrid, the RAV4 Hybrid, and the Camry Hybrid.

And the strategy appears to be working for the carmaker.

Recently released sales figures for Q3 show that more than 44 percent of its US sales during that period were electrified vehicles.

During September, Toyota sold 185,748 vehicles in total.

Sales of electrified vehicles totaled 85,092, which represents 45.8 percent of all vehicles sold.

Taking a look at the third quarter as a whole, Toyota sold 629,137 vehicles, an increase of 15.9 percent on the same time last year.

Of those cars sold, 282,794 were electrified, a jump of more than 10 percent from last year.

“Strong customer demand continues across our entire lineup, and vehicles are selling as fast as we build them,” Toyota senior vice president Andrew Gilleland said in a statement.

“As we gear up for the next-generation RAV4, the current model remains a customer favorite.

“Our multi-pathway powertrain strategy is also driving steady growth, with electrified vehicles nearing 50 of our sales.”

The Toyota Prius is the top-selling hybrid in North America

As well as being the oldest mass-produced hybrid, the Prius is also the best-selling hybrid in North America

Not only that, but across the entire electrified space – hybrids, plug-ins, EVs – only the Tesla Model 3 is in front.

Since its 2023 redesign, sales of the Prius have gone up a staggering 85.5 percent, and by September this year, it had already sold a little under 43,000 units.

So it looks as though there’s still plenty of life in the Prius yet.
