The world’s first floating city to be built in the Maldives

The world’s first floating island city is going to be built in the Maldives.
The city will be made up of thousands of floating homes, hotels, restaurants, and shops – all with incredible water views.
The build will also be surrounded by sandy beaches facing out onto coral reefs.

It will be developed in a warm-water lagoon just 10 minutes by boat from the capital of the Maldives, Male.
Dutch Docklands, together with the Government of The Maldives revealed plans for the “first-of-its-kind island city” this week.
The city will be made up of hexagon-shaped blocks, designed to look like the Maldives’ famous coral.
Renderings of the city show it with bright, colorful Maldivian architecture.

The streets will be lined with palm trees and beachy communal living areas.
People will be able to walk, bike or sail everywhere they want on the island.
While the city island floats, there will be barriers built around the lagoon to serve as wave breakers.
Giant new reefs will also be created to act as water breakers.
Dutch Docklands said the city would “reimagine” the future of living.
“As a nation at the front lines of global warming, the Maldives is perfectly positioned to reimagine how humankind will survive and thrive in the face of rising seas and coastal erosion,” they said.
Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed said while they could not stop the waves, they could “rise with them”.
The Maldives Floating City will begin construction this year and be completed in phases over the next five years.
Once built, it will welcome not only tourists, but be home to Maldivians as well.
The Maldivian Government said it will have everything you need to live there including a hospital, school and government building.
Prices for individual homes are expected to start at $250,000.
