The CEO of Uber recently declared that EV robotaxis are a ‘trillion-dollar-plus’ business, despite the setbacks seen by some companies and the doubts expressed by potential passengers.
Robotaxis and self-driving services are starting to be talked about more regularly, with Tesla just one company that’s investing in the technology.
Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi recently spoke to Bloomberg Television about the tech, and in his mind, they are a ‘trillion-dollar-plus’ potential business idea, and that there is huge growth potential in various markets.
Regardless of those doubts and setbacks, Uber looks set to double down on it in a big way.

Where self-driving technology could really take off
Khosrowshahi said that there could be over 10 markets where Uber’s self-driving could be used in 2026.
Some of those will be in the Asia-Pacific region as well as in the US and the Middle East.
Uber’s stance on self-driving isn’t that surprising when you consider some of the current trends.
Many analysts said that autonomous mobility is a massive bet at the current time.

McKinsey, a management consulting company, estimated that robotaxis could reach big money.
They predicted that the shared-mobility market could be as high as $1 trillion by 2030
It would appear many are putting good money on robotaxis.
There is now a wait, however, to see if the hype is fulfilled.
Why is there so much hype around robotaxis?
Uber isn’t the only company seemingly going all-in with robotaxis and self-driving.
Tesla has said something similar.
The EV company is aiming for one million self-driving cars by the end of 2025.
However, despite some of this hype, some aren’t so sure on the matter, and global bank HSBC recently warned that the market has been ‘widely overestimated.’

It could, in fact, take several years before fleets of robotaxis begin to make decent money.
The costs involved are high, too, as it costs $150,000 for just a single Waymo robotaxi to be built.
Yet there does seem to be a huge amount of hype around them and their potential.
It will be fascinating to see if Uber’s CEO is right in his predictions.
