Road dividing the US-Canada border right down the middle has caused confusion about which side belongs to which country

  • The US-Canada border splits this road right down the middle
  • There are American homes on one side and Canadian on the other
  • It’s illegal to cross the border without reporting to customs

This road is called Canusa Street, and the US-Canada border divides it right down the middle.

That’s right, on one side of this street is considered Vermont, USA, while the other half extends to Quebec, Canada.

We’ve seen roads connecting two countries before, but this takes things to the next level.

Unsurprisingly, it leaves people, especially tourists, a bit confused.

Canusa Street is the US-Canada border

When walking down this street, you can’t ‘legally’ cross it without reporting to customs.

A few decades ago, the local law was somewhat flexible, allowing people to go on the other side of the road ever-so-slightly.

However, you’ll now be penalized if you’re caught on the wrong side, even by accident.

A video from 2018 on the Tom Scott YouTube channel elaborates on the bizarre situation.

The host explained that geographically, the US-Canada border doesn’t precisely pass through Canusa Street in a straight line.

In fact, one end of the road lies entirely in Vermont, United States, while the other end is in Canada.

Fortunately, this road stretches only for half a mile, so there aren’t that many confused citizens.

There’s obviously some slight leniency if you’re crossing a couple of ‘inches’ on either side.

But as an American resident, you can’t simply visit your Canadian neighbors.

Well, without reporting to the border authorities, anyway.

Travelers on this road end up confused

Canusa Street sounds as if it’s straight out of a fantasy film.

Both sides each have their own mayors, and you can often spot the US Postal Service and Canada Post trucks on the same road at the same time.

Even more confusingly, both sides of the street have different road signs.

For instance, the American side has signboards that read ‘Canusa Rd,’ and the Canadian side’s signs read differently.

All things considered, one thing stays true for both sides.

There are several mysterious abandoned Teslas in both countries.

Canadians were recently puzzled over a cryptic Tesla collecting parking tickets, and in America, an abandoned Cybertruck was collecting dust as even became a tourist attraction in Seattle.
