Utah man takes Tesla Cybertruck to CarMax for appraisal and gets a 'shocker' of an offer that has him walking away laughing in disbelief

The Tesla Cybertruck has already had a pretty wild journey when it comes to its value, but one Utah man was still convinced CarMax had to be joking when he saw the number on his appraisal.

He had taken a green-wrapped Cybertruck with only around 3,000 miles to the dealership to see what it was worth.

He had heard stories of huge offers for the futuristic EV and thought its rarity could work in his favor.

Instead, CarMax came back with an offer that left him laughing in disbelief.

The Tesla Cybertruck appraisal from CarMax was a major shock

This YouTuber wasn’t actually looking to sell the Tesla Cybertruck he took to CarMax because it wasn’t his EV, but wanted to find out how much CarMax thought the unusual Tesla was worth.

The truck had around 3,000 miles on the odometer and was covered in a distinctive forest-green wrap, making it considerably more eye-catching than the already-hard-to-miss standard Cybertruck according to the YouTuber, WHAT’S INSIDE? FAMILY.

He also pointed out that there were relatively few Cybertrucks available at the time and said he had heard claims of CarMax offering as much as $125,000 for some examples.

So when he handed the keys over for an appraisal, expectations were understandably high, but there was a slight complication, though.

Because the Cybertruck wasn’t actually his and it wasn’t registered in his name, it meant CarMax initially couldn’t process it like a normal appraisal.

Eventually, the team agreed to inspect it, photograph the truck, and send the information through the appropriate channels to get a valuation.

The process took longer than expected, partly because the Cybertruck was still relatively unusual in CarMax’s system, and then came the number: $76,000.

The YouTuber thought the figure was so surprising that he couldn’t help but laugh, but it wasn’t out of joy like this woman and her Cybertruck.

Considering the hype surrounding the Cybertruck and the much higher numbers he had heard about, the offer was a lot less than he had anticipated, but there is an interesting twist when you look at what the Cybertruck is worth now.

The Cybertruck is worth less than that now

The Cybertruck market has changed quite a bit since the Utah man’s appraisal, and the latest numbers suggest that his $76,000 offer was actually pretty strong.

According to Kelley Blue Book’s latest valuation, a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck AWD currently has an estimated resale value of around $72,600 and a trade-in value of around $69,200.

KBB’s estimated values vary depending on the vehicle’s condition, with an excellent-condition example currently worth around $72,240 as a trade-in and $75,750 in a private-party sale.

That makes the $76,000 CarMax offer from the original appraisal particularly interesting.

It was actually higher than what KBB currently estimates the Cybertruck could fetch in a private sale, although the exact value of any individual truck will depend on its mileage, condition, options and history.

And the Cybertruck’s new-car pricing has changed dramatically too.

Tesla has introduced cheaper versions of the truck since the original models arrived, while KBB currently lists the 2024 Cybertruck at around $76,800 as a starting price.

That makes the Utah man’s reaction to the CarMax offer even more amusing in hindsight.

He may have laughed when he saw the $76,000 number, expecting the Cybertruck to be worth considerably more, but today’s used-market figures suggest CarMax wasn’t actually that far off the mark.

In fact, depending on the condition of the truck, that supposedly shocking offer could have been a pretty good deal.
