Volkswagen UK has just launched ID. Promise, a bold new initiative that gives customers a 100-day window to decide if life with an EV really works for them.
It’s kind of like an extended test drive: one where you can actually commute, take a road trip, and go to the grocery store before committing.
The program runs from November 3, 2025, through March 31, 2026, and it’s designed to tempt those who are curious about EVs, but not quite ready to make the leap.
In short, the German carmaker is allowing you to try before you buy.

Take your pick from any Volkswagen ID EVs
Here’s how ID. Promise works.
Buyers who choose any of Volkswagen’s electric ID models can take them home and live with them for up to 100 days.
These include the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, or ID.7 Tourer.

If somewhere along the way they decide that looking for public chargers isn’t their thing, they can hand the EV back.
Volkswagen will buy it back with a small 3 percent usage fee, and deduct any costs for damage or modifications.
Apart from that, there are no tricks or fine print to be worried about.
And yes, it covers both cash buyers and those who’ve financed their car through Volkswagen Financial Services on a PCP deal.
The only exclusions are fleet cars, Motability customers, contract hires, and ex-demonstrators.
Why VW thinks it will work
VW really backs its decision to give buyers a chance to try before they buy.
Rod McLeod, Director of Volkswagen UK, says the idea behind ID. Promise came from a clear trend among real-world EV owners.
“Time and time again, our customers tell us they would never go back to petrol or diesel after making the move,” he explains.
“But there are still plenty of people sitting on the fence. This gives them the perfect chance to ‘drive and decide’ with no strings attached.”
The lineup on offer pretty much covers every shape and size of electric Volkswagen.
There’s the Golf-sized ID.3, or the family-friendly ID.4 SUV.

You can also choose the sleek ID.5 coupe variant, or splurge on the long-distance ID.7 and its roomy Tourer version.
By giving hesitant buyers a safety net, Volkswagen is flipping the script on EV adoption.
Instead of trying hard to appeal to prospective EV drivers, it’s letting people experience it for themselves.
And chances are, once they do, they won’t be going back to gas-powered cars anytime soon.
