Waymo, the pioneer in self-driving taxi services, has opened its lead over Tesla, as it has announced the launch of its autonomous vehicle fleet in more than 10 new cities across America.
Driverless cabs are on the rise in 2025, with Austin, Texas, being the hub for both Waymo and Tesla to flex their self-driving taxi cars.
But as the wheels of the year roll on, so does autonomous vehicle supremacy, hitting more cities throughout the States.
Now, Waymo has announced an extension of its American dominance, targeting multiple new cities, including the Big Apple.

Waymo announces expansion into New York, Philly, and more by 2026
Already, Waymo covers the biggest area of the autonomous vehicle brands, beating Tesla’s crude map of Texas.
Having already established a fleet in San Francisco, Atlanta, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin, the Google-affiliated EV maker has now announced its biggest expansion yet, hitting all borders of the US.
At the top of the priority list are New York City and Philadelphia, and the brand is following through on its previous promise of landing in Miami.

The full list of cities includes New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Houston, Miami, San Antonio, San Diego, Nashville, Tennessee, Boston, and even Tokyo.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has claimed that Waymo self-driving taxi cars will arrive in these cities by the end of the year.
“The Waymo driver has now autonomously driven over 100 million miles on public roads, and the team is testing across more than 10 cities this year, including New York and Philadelphia,” he said.
“We hope to serve riders in all 10 in the future.”
Can Tesla catch up in the self-driving taxi war?
Tesla and the Robotaxi armada were hot on the heels of Waymo earlier this year, after a rather successful launch in Austin, Texas, where the two brands even came bonnet-to-bonnet.
However, expansion has been hard to come by. The autonomous vehicle supplier has doubled its reach in Texas, but moving to California as a second stop has already been hindered.
Its first outings in San Francisco have needed ‘chauffeurs’ as the Tesla doesn’t have the right licenses to run unoccupied self-driving cars in the city.

For now, Waymo stands clear of Tesla in the US, and with Tokyo on the list as its first overseas expansion, it looks as if a global empire is on the cards.
