There’s a tiny desert community in southern Arizona with one of the most unusual town names in the United States.
It’s called Why, Arizona.
At first glance, the name sounds like a philosophical question or the punchline to a joke.
But the real reason the town ended up with that name comes down to an unusual highway intersection.

The unusual highway intersection that gave Why, Arizona, its name
Why sits in the Sonoran Desert where State Route 85 and State Route 86 meet.
When the community was first being named, the two highways formed a clear Y-shaped intersection.
Locals thought the obvious solution was to name the town after the shape.
And so they planned to call it simply ‘Y.’

It made sense.
The roads looked like a Y on the map, and the name would have been one of the shortest town names in the country.
However, when the name was submitted, Arizona officials rejected it.
At the time, the state required all official place names to contain at least three letters, which meant a single-letter name wasn’t allowed.
Rather than come up with something completely different, residents found a simple workaround.
They just spelled the letter out instead.
The town resubmitted the name as ‘Why’, and this time it met the rules.
The state approved it, and the unusual name stuck.
Why became famous for its unusual name
Today, Why remains a small desert community, but its unusual name has made it memorable.
Travelers driving through the area often stop just to snap photos of the road signs.

And once people hear the backstory, the name makes perfect sense.
It wasn’t meant to be mysterious or philosophical.
It simply started with a Y-shaped highway and strict town-naming rules.
