A new, electric successor to the DeLorean could be here by the year’s end.

That is if the new DeLorean Motor Company has anything to do with it.

Not associated in any way with the original company that made the DMC-12 known as the time machine from Back to the Future, the ‘new’ company was founded in 1995 as a seller of new old stock and reproduced parts for the original car.

However, the company has now announced a shift away from this model and towards being a car manufacturer just like its predecessor.

It’s expected to be a fully-electric sports car inspired by the original DeLorean, still sporting classic design features like its gullwing doors that can be seen in the teaser video above.

With famed design house Italdesign sharing the teaser video as well, there’s a good chance the new DeLorean EV will be designed by its current team.

Giorgetto Guigaro designed the DMC-12 during his 48 year tenure with the company, but left in 2015.

There’s every chance it could ride on the new electric platform developed by Italdesign in conjunction with Williams Advanced Engineering, too.

Beyond this, DeLorean is skint on details, but it does mention a planned reveal of the new model later in 2022.

Could this much-anticipated return for the brand finally be happening? Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, check out the time we got to drive the actual DeLorean from the movie:
