France has just activated something amazing: the world’s first highway that charges electric cars as they drive.

The 1.5-kilometer stretch of road outside Paris is equipped with an inductive charging system that can wirelessly power cars and trucks on the move.

No plugs, no stops, just constant and seamless energy transfer from the road to the vehicle.

The pilot project, built into the A10 motorway, marks a major step toward solving one of the EV industry’s biggest challenges: range and recharging time.

World’s first highway with charge-as-you-drive technology

While this tech seemed like it wouldn’t be hitting the real world until the distant future, France has activated it, making it a very real and useful piece of technology – a self-charging EV highway.

The tech uses copper coils embedded beneath the asphalt to create a magnetic field that transfers power to vehicles fitted with special receivers.

As long as the vehicle is moving over the charging lane, it can pull energy directly from the grid.

This dynamic charging method is designed to keep electric trucks and passenger cars topped up during long trips, slashing the need for long stops or oversized batteries.

Officials behind the project believe it could reduce CO2 emissions from road transport by more than 80 percent compared to diesel trucks.

A turning point for electric mobility

For EV drivers, this could mean the end of range anxiety and the start of continuous power on the go. For automakers, it’s a glimpse into a future where roads themselves become part of the charging network.

Supercars and performance electric cars could one day take full advantage of smaller, lighter batteries and focus purely on speed and handling, not battery capacity.

France’s new road is a small stretch for now, but it’s a massive leap for electric mobility.

The highway of the future doesn’t just take you somewhere, it powers you there.
